Apple and the iPhone 3G

13 07 2008

So yeah I was one of those nerds that waited hour in line at the Apple Store to get the new iPhone 3G. No I wasn’t hardcore enough to camp out for the week or even camp out over night. I woke up in the morning around 6:30 and got to the store around 7:30. That put me at about 500th person in line. The expected time was about 3 hours because of Apple requiring customers to activate it in the store. From my understanding, the idea behind this was to prevent people from jailbreaking it to use on any other network. No big deal to me as long as I get my phone. That is where the problem came in. AT&T’s servers crashed after a couple of hours and caused a 3 hour wait to turn into 8 hours for me. Now, I saw a few articles online where people were complaining about Apple and saying crap about the experience in general.

Well, I had a great time. To start off the morning before the store even opened, the particular Apple store I went to had been passing out bottled water for people. After a couple of hours, they started passing out coupons for either a free breakfast sandwich or free lunch sandwich with the purchase of a drink and fries. Then they did that exact same thing again around lunch time so people could go get lunch. Another hour or so passed and Apple actually sent some employees to get one of Chick-fil-A’s giant tray of chicken nuggets and another tray of brownies and they started going down the line so everyone could get some food and snacks to go with their water.

I had to wait a long time and barely made it to work, but overall I had a good experience when I got my iPhone 3G. That just shows how Apple likes to take care of its customers and it is something I won’t forget.
