Apple has today announced that the release of MacOS X 10.5 Leopard will be delayed until October due to the development of iPhone.
iPhone contains the most sophisticated software ever shipped on a mobile device, and finishing it on time has not come without a price — we had to borrow some key software engineering and QA resources from our Mac OS® X team, and as a result we will not be able to release Leopard at our Worldwide Developers Conference in early June as planned.
Apple goes on to state that while Leopard will be feature-complete by WWDC, they could not “deliver the quality release that we and our customers expect from us.” As if to demonstrate that point, Apple recently released a new build of Leopard which continued to contain a long-list of known issues.
Developers will be given a “near-final” beta copy of Leopard at the Worldwide Developers Conference in early June.

A new rumor is flying around the net that Apple will soon be incorporating an H.264 hardware chip in every Mac machine. This hardware chip is designed for the encoding and decoding of videos, especially high-def video at 1080p. Now you may be asking, “How is this going to be a benefit?” Current machines use software to encode videos and movies, using the processor and other components of your computer, whether it be a Mac or a Windows machine.
Since it is using the processor to primarily handle the encoding, its pretty much all your computer can do because video encoding is very demanding. If you were to try to run any other program while encoding a video, it would be very sluggish. If Apple does actually include a chip just for video encoding and decoding, it will take a great strain off your processor and for the most part you can use your computer like normal while encoding a high-def video.
So when does this kick-ass chip start coming with new Macs? The very earliest is looking like June. It could be the end of the year though before they actually start coming out.

Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with Apple engineers, get a firsthand look at the latest technology, and spend a week getting the kind of inspiration you won’t find anywhere else.
Earlier rumors had pegged the date of the conference for this time. Last year’s WWDC conference was delayed to August to coincide with Intel Mac Pros and the Leopard Preview.
WWDC is Apple’s developer conference and focuses on developer topics. However, in recent years, with the demise of the summer Macworld expo, WWDC’s keynote address has become a venue for significant Apple announcements.
